MPCA proposes to add 2 contaminated sites to Minnesota Superfund list

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is proposing to add two contaminated sites to Minnesota’s Superfund list. By adding the former Exclusive Cleaners site in Worthington (Nobles County) and the Spring Park Municipal Wells site in Spring Park (Hennepin County) to the list, state funding will be available to investigate and clean up these sites.
The MPCA announced the proposed additions in the June 23, 2014 issue of the “Minnesota State Register.”
The contaminants of concern at both the Worthington and Spring Lake sites are chlorinated solvents, which can adversely affect health, particularly the immune system and developing fetuses, and may pose risks from long-term exposure.
The MPCA invites members of the public to submit written comments on these proposed additions to the state Superfund List. Written comments must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. on July 24, 2014. They should be submitted to Crague Biglow, MPCA Remediation Division, 520 Lafayette Rd. N., Saint Paul, MN 55155-4194.
A fact sheet that details the investigation and actions that have already been taken at the Exclusive Cleaners site, 101 Second Ave. in Worthington, is at http://www.pca.state.mn.us/index.php/view-document.html?gid=21328.
The MPCA wants to add the Worthington site to the state Superfund list so it has funding to research the extent of vapor intrusion; install mitigation systems, if needed; and determine the groundwater cleanup actions that need to be taken.
A fact sheet about the contamination at the Spring Park Municipal Wells site, 4333 Warren Ave. in Spring Park, is at http://www.pca.state.mn.us/index.php/view-document.html?gid=21327.
The MPCA wants to add the Spring Park Municipal Wells site to the list so state funds are available to investigate the contamination source, solve the municipal drinking water contamination issue, and remediate the contamination.
fact sheet about Minnesota’s Superfund Program is available on the MPCA website.
