30 years of pollution: DEP sues Bergen business, saying it failed to clean up discharges

Multiple owners of an Elmwood Park dry cleaning business polluted the area around its Grove Street location with a potentially cancer-causing liquid solvent over the course of 30 years and failed to clean it up when ordered to do so, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The lawsuit says three different owners of the cleaners never complied with a directive last year to begin cleaning up excessive amounts of tetrachloroethylene — a key chemical used in dry cleaning, also known perchloroethylene, or PCE, that is one of the more common pollutants in New Jersey residential areas.
