Shenango Inc. said Tuesday it will pay a $1.75 million fine to resolve environmental complaints about the company’s Neville Island coke battery dating to 2005, when the plant had different ownership.
DTE Energy Services of Ann Arbor, Mich., said it bought the plant in 2008 and upgraded it to reduce emissions and bring it into compliance with environmental standards.
The settlement with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, state Department of Environmental Protection and Allegheny County Health Department resolves problems cited in a notice of violation issued in 2006, the company said.
The agreement also calls for Shenango to complete welding of oven wall joints at the coke battery, build a stormwater management system and make other improvements.
Shenango produces metallurgical coke, coke oven gas and other byproducts that can be sold, and employs about 150 full-time workers.
