Chemical pollution in North Carolina to clean up

Federal authorities say they’ve reached a proposed settlement with just two firms for the cleanup of a chemical plant near the Cape Fear River.
The Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency said in a news release Thursday that the settlement has been reached with Honeywell International Inc. and International Paper Co.. Store, the companies have agreed to treat and dispose of sediments and soils contaminated by compounds that have mercury and PCBs.
The settlement says that the from 1963 to 2000, the plant that was LCP-Holtrachem produced substances like acid, liquid chlorine, hydrogen gas, liquid bleach along with sodium hydroxide at the plant in Riegelwood at Columbus County, adjacent to the Cape Fear River.
The settlement must be approved by A court.
