A sewer spill on February 14 along Holly Springs Road north of Ten-Ten Road occurred when a private contractor installing communication lines hit an inactive wastewater pipeline. Town staff were alerted to the sewer spill at 1:30 p.m. and stopped the spill around 7:30 p.m. About 13,500 gallons of waste reached Dutchman’s Branch; no fish kill was observed. Town crews contained the spill and will begin making repairs once the pipeline is completely drained of residual wastewater.
The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 24 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters. Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
