Jersey City firefighters and PSE&G crews responded to a gas main leak yesterday at 900 Garfield Ave. after a contractor mistakenly struck and ruptured the line, fire officials said.
The gas line, located just east of Garfield and Dakota avenues, was punctured around 1:40 p.m., officials said.
The area is a chromium cleanup site, and the workers were carrying out a shallow excavation in search of the gas utility line, Fire Director Armando Roman said.
No injuries were reported, and all site remediation work was stopped for the day, officials said.
Repairs to the 6-inch plastic line were expected to be completed last night, PSE&G spokeswoman Deann Muzikar said.
