The site of a dry cleaning shop on Dewey Avenue in Greece has been added to the state’s list of inactive hazardous waste sites that pose a significant threat to public health and/or the environment.
The former Perfecto-Dry Cleaners property is a .25 acre parcel at 3805 Dewey Ave., near the corner of Dewey Avenue and Sutorius Drive. The site is currently home to the active Julians Dry Cleaners.
According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the property is contaminated by unknown quantities of 1, 1 dichloroethene, tetrochloroethene and trichloroethene, all volatile organic compounds usually associated with dry cleaning activities. Benzene found on site is likely related to a nearby former gas station site.
Initial DEC investigations found contaminants are not migrating to a nearby tributary to Slater Creek. And, as the area is served by public water, there is no danger of people drinking site-related contaminants in the groundwater.
Now that the site has been added to the state’s Superfund Program, additional future actions will be taken to determine the extent of contamination on and off the site, the potential for exposures and possible methods of cleanup.
