Illinois Attorney General orders Sugar Camp Mine to test for ‘forever chemicals’

Thursday, Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced an interim consent order with Sugar Camp Energy LLC over an alleged release of dangerous “forever chemicals” from a mine in Franklin County.

A lawsuit filed earlier this year alleges Sugar Camp used firefighting foams containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” in an attempt to extinguish an underground fire at the Sugar Camp mine, located near Macedonia. PFAS were subsequently discharged into waters near the coal mine. Read more.
