Judge grants conditional approval of Penobscot River mercury pollution settlement

A federal judge has indicated support for one of largest environmental settlements in Maine history, signaling a possible resolution to a decades-long legal battle over mercury pollution in the Penobscot River.

U.S. District Judge John Woodcock has given conditional approval to a consent decree that would require Mallinckrodt to pay as much as $267 million to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River caused by a chemical plant that formerly operated in Orrington. Read more.
