Officials representing the Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino in Watersmeet, Michigan, have reported that the Legionella bacterium—the cause of Legionnaire’s disease—has been discovered inside the resort’s hotel.
According to Harri Leigh of UpperMichigansSource.com, a customer staying at the hotel was found to have the sickness, causing officials to evacuate the building and begin testing the water, finding that it was positive for the bacteria.
Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino officials announced that the sanitization process has already begun, and that the facility will not be re-opened until they are 100 percent confident it will be safe for customers.
Hotel officials told UpperMichigansSource.com, “We engaged in a widespread remediation effort to eradicate any bacteria that may be present. We will not reopen until we are fully confident that this remediation effort is complete.”
The temporary closure could spell major trouble for the resort, though, as the winter season is a major source of business. Not only will the Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino suffer, but the surrounding businesses will also see less traffic during the shutdown.
Thankfully, the water tests at the casino and restaurants in the Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino complex came back negative, and both of those facilities remain open while the hotel has been closed.
Since only one person was impacted by the bacteria, it’s not being considered an outbreak.
