In a survey conducted in September 2012 by researchers at Oregon State, George Mason and Yale universities, more than half of 1061 respondents said they did not know how much they had heard about fracking, with around 39% saying they had heard nothing at all.
Researchers said that 58% “specifically indicated that they did not know anything about the issue” or responded with a statement deemed “irrelevant”, such as a reference to Battlestar Galactica, the popular science fiction TV show whose characters use the word ‘frak’ as an expletive.
Of those who are aware of fracking, supporters tended to be older, more highly educated, more politically conservative and more likely to get news from television.
Opponents of fracking, in contrast, are more likely to be women, hold “egalitarian worldviews” and read newspapers more than once a week, the survey found.
