Northeast Iowa dairy farm fined for contaminating creek

A dairy farm near Decorah that has been repeatedly cited by state regulators for manure releases was recently fined $8,000 for contaminating a tributary of a prominent creek that flows through the town.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources found in April 2023 that the farm operated by Darryl Humpal, about seven miles southwest of Decorah, had leaked manure again, when melting snow caused significant runoff and a wall that was meant to contain the manure had failed. Tests of the water in a tributary of Dry Run showed elevated levels of ammonia nitrogen, according to a recent DNR order. Read more.
