Pentagon Estimates $3 Billion ‘Forever Chemicals’ Cleanup Cost
The cost to clean up a family of toxic “forever chemicals” that have polluted military bases across the country is expected to increase to at least $3 billion, a Defense Department official told House lawmakers today.
The estimate for cleaning up chemicals such as perfluorinated carboxylic acid, or PFAS, used in firefighting foam is expected to grow as the Defense Department continues investigations and designs remedies for groundwater pollution, Maureen Sullivan, deputy assistant secretary of defense for environment, told the House Appropriations Committee.
