When Ruediger Kuehr started asking municipalities in his home country of Germany what they would do when the hundreds of thousands of electronic tablets distributed to school students during the pandemic came to the end of their lives, he was met with blank faces. The electronics engineer, who heads up a U.N. effort to tackle e-waste, opens new tab, says no one had thought about collection, repair or disposal.

The danger is that those tablets, and the millions distributed in schools across the U.S. and Europe, will eventually end up in the mounting pile of highly environmentally polluting, but intrinsically valuable, electronic waste. Read more.
