The state will spend about $621,000 to clean up chemicals left in the ground at the site of the former Roxy Cleaners at 156 Delaware Ave. in Delmar.
Plans call for removal of about 1,650 cubic yards of soil tainted with four carcinogens – tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride, according to a notice from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Also, chemicals will be injected into the ground to neutralized any remaining pollution, and an adjoining building will be fitted with an air pressurization system to vent any potentially hazardous vapors out of the building and into the outside air.
In August, DEC awarded the cleanup contract under the state Superfund cleanup project to Nature’s Way Environmental. Work is expected to be done by December.
The former Roxy building was demolished in 2014 and only a concrete slab now remains on the 1.1 acre property, which is primarily a parking lot.
