Report: Toxic chemicals found in Gilbertsville Elementary School’s water

Concerns about groundwater contamination tied to the Boyertown Landfill widened this week after officials confirmed that tap water at Gilbertsville Elementary School contains PFAS levels above the federal safety standard, according to information shared during a public meeting Wednesday night.
State and federal environmental officials met with more than 100 residents to discuss PFAS contamination impacting private wells near the 30-acre landfill, located off Congo Road. During that meeting, according to The Mercury, it was disclosed that Gilbertsville Elementary, about a mile from the landfill’s northern boundary, has recorded average PFAS levels of 6.7 parts per trillion, exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s current health advisory limit of 4.0 ppt, per the report.
