Construction of the new Hilton Garden Inn in Corning is on hold because of soil contamination.
Our newspaper partner, The Leader, spoke with Corning City Councilman Chris Karam, who said manufacturing waste such as ash, glass and brick has been found in the soil underneath the former days inn off riverside drive.
Barbara Purvis, President and Director of Essex Hotel Management, which is overseeing the project, said work was stopped towards the end of may by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Today, 18 News spoke with Frank Muccini, City Councilman of the Fifth Ward, who says he hopes the project is up and running soon.
“It’s a big project and we hope that it gets going and gets finished quickly because there’s a lot of jobs involved and it adds quite of bit to the north side,” Frank Muccini said.
Muccini couldn’t comment on when the project is supposed to finish.
He said the contamination issue is in the hands of the D.E.C.
City officials and local business owners feel the addition of the Hilton Garden Inn will help revitalize bridge street business.
