Tar spill on Route 11 in Springfield leads to heavy clean-up

A paving project on Route 11 in Springfield called the roadway to be shut for several hours on Monday after a tar spill caused an estimated 1,500 gallons of chemicals to spill out of a construction vehicle.

Officials were called to the scene after receiving word that one of the truck’s operators may have gotten burned by the substance while trying to stop the machine malfunction.

The spill covered the roadway and some of the substance leaked into a nearby stream. Read more.
