Waterbury removes contaminated tank, avoids potential daily fines

The city said it has taken care of a contaminated underground storage tank at the Mad River redevelopment site that the state previously warned the city could be fined over.
In May, Waterbury officials received a letter from the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection concerning what Mayor Paul Pernerewski Jr. described at the time as a “10,000-gallon underground storage tank containing PCB-contaminated oily water and sludge” that was found at the 359 Mill St. and 777 South Main St. site, along with soil contamination.
